uses can be very different depending on who uses them

some use them for this, others for that etc etc

yeah there are many ways in using them

i usually use either lighten, screen or linear dodge to get rid of the black and/or blend the render in

and if you want, desaturate the render first

you can even smudge them too and set them to those upper layer settings

I like them on screen mode, and wawe them ( it helps my flow very much)

Set them on lighten,screen to remove the edges
Adjust them regarding on your flow
use them for effects,create clipping masks on them,etc....
