Tut about layering and blending.

Have read many tutorials that assume that someone knows what the different blending options are and do. However I can never seem to get things to work right when I make an attempt to use them. Would love a tutorial describing why you use each type of blend and how to layer them to make things work for signatures and pictures and still show each part your attmepting to show in a finished picture.
