I wouldnt follow a tut if i where you

something goes wrong your not in the know how to correct it

You bassically need to know HTML and CSS to a decent standard to customize the look of it, and e bit of experience of web design and how websites work

I wouldnt bother with php for a while, its more behind the scenes programming, which is already done for you by IPB team =D just learn html and css for styling =]

hahahahaha, have you ever coded an IPB skin? Custom template bits? Skinning is not just replacing images.

beh board skinning sucks,
though windows media player skins are easy to make, some skins i made (most of them are only coded and had some improved art work (to make it a better skin to use and hover/map images) by me.

coding is the the most complicated part.

btw to change the background just go to advanced CSS and search for

background: #(color here) url(images/imagehere.gif);
